For
DVI ( Digital Visual Interface) is an interface that is designed exclusively for the transmission of video data. It is now used on many motherboards and graphics cards, and is used for connection of screens. With us you get refurbished and used computer monitors that use the
DVI standard and thus provide a much better picture than
VGA for example. For notebooks, the port is installed rarely directly due to its size, but it can be used by one of our refurbished docks here often. In the field of consumer electronics is now used by almost all manufacturers
HDMI to connect the individual devices, as well as audio signals can be transmitted here.
What characteristics offers the DVI connector? A great advantage of this standard is that both the transmission of digital as well as analog video signals is possible. Thus, a simple backward compatibility with the previous
VGA is given. Do you, for example, a monitor that supports only
VGA, you can make a conversion of the DVI connector on one VGA interface through the use of a passive adapter. Due to the different possibilities, several different types of cable and connector assignments have been published. Since this can quickly become confusing, we have summarized the basic characteristics in the following:
DVI - I These cables and connectors can transmit analog and digital signals. In the variant Single Link resolutions up to 1920 x 1200 pixels possible. However, if you use the Dual Link version, the maximum screen resolution 2560 x 1600 pixels.
DVI - D The possible resolutions are here just as with
DVI-I, however, this classification only transmit digital signals. Sometimes it may also happen that cables are offered with terms such as "12 +1 Pins". This means no loss of quality per se, but it ensures that the operating system you are using does not automatically recognize the monitor.
DVI -A This standard is mainly used for adapter from DVI to VGA, since only one analog transmission is possible here. Often, they are also supplied with a graphics card for a possibly still existing and older monitor can be connected.
What is still to consider when buying ? Even if their device or video card with a DVI -I jack, it may be that a lower resolution than the above is possible. This is mainly because some manufacturers use these jacks, so any kind of cables and connectors fit. Indeed, it is possible a DVI -D cable to use on a
DVI-I connector to operate a monitor with a DVI connector. It can, however, not a
DVI-I cable to use a DVI -D socket. So check in doubt, always in the manual of the device to see which resolution is the maximum possible.
