PCI Express (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express)

The Peripheral Component Interconnect Express Standard (abbreviated to PCI Express, PCIe or PCI-E) provides for connection to peripherals on the chipset of the motherboard or processor. He is also the successor to PCI and AGP, which are more and more replaced by this since 2004. The big advantage is the significant increase in data transfer rate compared to its predecessors. During the development was partly used the name 3GIO, which stands for "3rd Generation Input / Output". We offer different cars with graphics cards with PCI Express interface, which particularly benefit from the higher speed. What differs from conventional PCI Express PCI

the main difference in the art is that instead of a bus system is a serial point-to-point connection is realized. The different devices are then connected internally via switches, so that each device can be addressed only, without affecting the communication of the other.

However, the PCIe slots and cards still differ in two other properties: the mechanical length and its maximum usable lanes. The mechanical length itself is subdivided into the following:

PCIe x1 with 25 mm
PCIe x4 with 39 mm
PCIe x8 with 56 mm
PCIe x16 with 89 mm

In general, the length corresponds to the number of available lanes, it can happen that a PCIe x16 slot from electrical point of view only one PCIe x8 is. Especially often this is the case if a motherboard multiple PCIe x16 slots are used simultaneously and provide some then only less lanes. In the desktop computer of the PCIe x1 slot is now generally used as a replacement for PCI, PCIe x16, however, solves the AGP port from. In servers is also used PCIe x4 for high data throughput rates, as they are needed, for example, disk controllers or network cards.

What cards are compatible with which slots?

In general, the standard that the slots and cards are compatible with each other. This applies, however, to note the following: there are so-called open slots in which it is possible to use larger cards. The card is for example PCIe x8 slot and one PCIe x4. If the insertion but prevents physically, you should apply not more pressure. But the other way around you can safely e.g. operate a PCI x1 card in a PCI x4 slot. Here, the final speed is always determined by what maximum support to both sides together. Since 2006, the manufacturers already recommended necessary to specify which slots and how many lanes they use or provide. Unfortunately, this is not implemented as such by all. In case of doubt should always be drawn to the rate appropriate manual.
