SATA is known mainly from mainboards and hard disks or SSDs, where the interface is used for the connection. With eSATA (abbreviation for external SATA), an external connection is also available for connecting SATA devices. This is often used with external hard drives, which also use eSATA.

Optically, simple SATA connections are almost identical to the eSATA counterparts. However, these differences show up why an eSATA cable can not be used inside a PC case. Please pay particular attention to the purchase of cables and similar accessories so that the respective plugs are suitable. For desktop PCs now also slot plates are available, which enable a retrofit of eSATA ports.

The data rate of most eSATA connections is around 3 Gbit / s and therefore complies with the SATA-II standard. However, the connection can often achieve better results than, for example, USB. With us, you get not only external hard disks with eSATA, but also used notebooks already have an appropriate interface.
