Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) was one of the first standard for connecting hard drives and optical drives inside the computer. The computer does this via a 40-pin interface that is integrated in most cases directly to the motherboard.
per connection, two devices are connected via a ribbon cable. For this purpose, the devices must be previously declared as master or slave. This is done via jumpers on the back of the drive.
