IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics)

Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) was one of the first standard for connecting hard drives and optical drives inside the computer. The computer does this via a 40-pin interface that is integrated in most cases directly to the motherboard.

per connection, two devices are connected via a ribbon cable. For this purpose, the devices must be previously declared as master or slave. This is done via jumpers on the back of the drive. The master is in this case connected usually at the end of the cable. When connecting cables are flat ribbon cable with 40 and 80 cores. The latter should be preferred, since 40 wires for shielding against noise on the data lines are used.

For hard drives, use the newer versions of the standard, the 80-conductor connection cables are required (valid from ATA -5). While at 3.5 inch drives, the power supply via a separate connection is made, this is drives on the ribbon cable realized at 2.5 inches. The standard has been continuously developed and located since 2005 in the version prior to 8 (ATA -8). It can, however, devices of different versions to be combined. Therefore, it is possible to operate newer hard drives on older motherboards and vice versa. The transmission speed is depending on the device used, at about 33.3 MB/s to 133 MB/s

Other synonyms for ATA are IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) and now also PATA (Parallel ATA). Of course, there are also special controller, the RAID implementation with IDE / ATA hard drives allow.
